Does Medicare or Medicaid cover GLP-1s?
Mostly no, and being enrolled also blocks you from manufacturer discounts.
For most of us, no. Under federal law Medicare cannot cover a drug used solely for weight loss. Medicaid is decided state by state and only about a quarter of states cover it, usually behind strict prior authorizations. Some states are actively rolling coverage back.
Here is the part that catches people out. Because of the Anti-Kickback Statute, manufacturer discount programs are closed to anyone enrolled in Medicaid or Medicare, even if you are not trying to bill them for it. Simply being enrolled disqualifies you.
That leaves full retail price, or a prescription provider and a compounding pharmacy paid out of pocket.
None of this is medical advice. It is educational material drawn from FAT BITCH: Killing the Willpower Myth by Cat Clark, and it does not replace your prescriber, your pharmacist, or your actual doctor. If something here does not match what your care team told you, go with your care team and bring this along to the conversation.
