GLP-1 FAQ  ·  Fertility

Can I get pregnant while taking a GLP-1?

Fertility often goes up sharply. But do not try to conceive on the medication, and plan two months off first.

Fertility frequently increases, and fast. Losing even 10% of your body weight can restart ovulation in a body that has been quiet for years. If your cycles were irregular or absent before, do not assume you are safe.

Three things are happening at once: the weight loss itself, better insulin handling (which fixes egg-quality problems you may not know you had, especially with PCOS), and the medication's anti-inflammatory effect.

Do not try to conceive while taking these medications. Babies born to mothers who used GLP-1s during pregnancy have lower average birth weights and the long-term picture is still being evaluated.

The recommendation is to be off the medicine for at least two months before trying. Talk to your doctor about tapering off before you stop contraception.

GLP-1s appear to improve male fertility too. If either of you is taking it, this is a sit-down conversation.
